Students
of the Week
The Student of the Week
program at J. E. Harrison Middle School is run by
the Positive Communication Committee. Each week
the 10 Core Teams, four in sixth grade, three in
seventh grade and three in eighth grade, plus the
Physical Education Team, the Music Team and the
Encore Team nominate students to be Students of
the Week. These students possess a positive character
trait. The traits are chosen from those studied
during Homebase activities. Each Student of the
Week will have a congratulatory letter sent home
to their parents or guardians, will have a candy
bar and a certificate delivered to their homebase,
and will have their name displayed in the library
with the other chosen students. Students can be
chosen as Student of the Week only once each school
year.

Camp Cadet
John Haas, a 6th grader at Harrison Middle School, was selected to receive the honor of attending Allegheny County Camp Cadet this past summer. Fifty students from schools within Allegheny County, ages 12-14 were selected through a two part interview and grade analysis to attend the camp. Camp Cadet is a mini police academy in which students interested in Law Enforcement as a Career Goal are put though the rigors of police academy training. The week long camp, in which no outside contact is allowed, (not even with parents) begins every morning at 5:30AM, with a 1 mile run, gives young law enforcement recruits the chance to participate in mock trials, crime scene investigations, demonstrations by the SWAT/ SERT, and K9 units, guest classroom speakers, rescue missions which include propelling from 100 feet in the air, rigorous daily exercise, marching, and discipline training by retired First Marine Sergea nt, Carl Curtis. Forty two Cadets who made it through training attended a full color guard graduation ceremony and received diplomas. Camp Cadet is designed to bring a better understanding of law enforcement and other community agencies to the youth who live in Allegheny County. John is the youngest Cadet to date, to graduate and succeed through the end of the program.
