We are continuing the exciting reading program:
Reading Counts. This program is similar to the Accelerated
Reader program that your students participated in when
they were in elementary school. For those of you unfamiliar
with either program, we have labeled certain books in the
library that are part of the program. Your child selects
one of these books, reads it, and then takes a ten-question
quiz on the computers at school. The computer then keeps
track of all progress the student makes. For each quiz
successfully taken, the student receives points. These
points are determined by the length and difficulty of the
book. |

| At Harrison Middle
School we will be combining a school-wide incentive program
with a variety of options in the classroom. I would like to
share the school-wide program with you. Each teacher will advise
your students on what their classroom expectations are. |

Any student
who passes a quiz with an 80% can fill out a coupon and
put it in the goldfish bowl in the library. On Monday mornings,
five names will be pulled out of the bowl and these names
will be read on the morning announcements. The winners
can then come to the library to choose a free paperback. |

Traveling
Trophy: The homebases on each team will be competing for
a weekly traveling trophy. At the end of the week, the
points accumulated by each homebase will be tallied. On
each team, the homebase with the most points will be announced
on Monday morning and they will host the trophy that week. |

• Students
can redeem 75 points for a Teen Center Ticket. The points
redeemed will not be taken away from their total needed
for the other contests. |

375 points:
Students will be eligible to go on a field trip in May.

| Students can check
on the computers in the library to see which quizzes we have.
We have placed the updated list of quizzes on the Harrison
website. At present we have about 2500 books that have quizzes
and will be adding to that list. If your child has a book that
he or she would like a quiz for, please have them come see
me so that I can add it to the next quiz order if it is available. |

| I have worked with
both Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts for five years in
other school districts. The progress that so many students
have made in their reading is phenomenal. The only drawback
I have found with this program is that cheating does occur.
These measures will be taken if a student is caught cheating:
1. All points will be deleted from their record in the library.
2. If a student is receiving a grade in class they will receive
a zero for the assignment. 3. An incidence report will be filed
in the principal’s
office. If you have any questions about Reading Counts please
call me in the library (412) 885-7887. |
